Self Portrait Tuesday #2 (and catching up on birthday celebrations)
This is my self portrait for today:
I am standing on my porch so you can see the snow which is definitely dictating my day today!
I just returned from a forty minute trip all the way to---
I was going to Salt Lake to get some book cloth for my book binding class tonight but, leaving it until today was obviously a mistake! The roads are terrible- slick and slushy, full of semi trucks and arrogant drivers who kept passing me on the shoulder while I was stopped in non-moving traffic! The visibility is minimal. And the wind is blowing really hard- it was pushing my car around! So, I turned back and came home.
I guess being housebound is not all bad- I have a chance to catch up on my blog! The last couple of days have been busy.
On Friday, we celebrated Kate's birthday. It was the best party we have ever had! Just two friends came for a late night with Kate. We had balloons and confetti. We made a tent out of streamers and placed mattresses on the floor under neath them. We had pizza, played games, decorated cupcakes, and opened presents. We watched a movie in our "party tent" and then Kate and her friends played shadow games and told scary stories with their flashlights while I put my younger kids to bed. I took the girls home about 10:30pm, put Kate and Megan to sleep on the mattresses in the living room, and went to bed just after 11pm! It was perfect!
Monday was Kelly's birthday. Ethan and I made him chocolate chip cookies- one of his favorites! I don't make them very often because they are not one of mine. After school, the kids and I delivered some to Kelly at work. We walked in singing, "You've had a birthday, shout Hooray..." I think he was embarrassed by us, or maybe for us. But we wanted him to know we were thinking of him.
After dinner, we used some of the chocolate chip cookies to make a homemade version of Never On Sundae (a dessert from The Pizza Factory- chocolate chip cookie crust with vanilla ice cream, topped with caramel and chocolate sauce.)
I never know what to do for Kelly. I'm still trying to figure out his love language. It is not gifts, though it is mine, so I bought him a couple of things anyway. He and I both loved The Prestige, which just came out on DVD. So, we gave him that. And, on those rare occasions Kelly shares some emotion, he loves to say "Wunderbar", so when Hannah posted about Wunderbar candy bars, I knew I had to get him some! His main gift is still a surprise- we are leaving him clues and he has to figure out what it is. I'll post more at the end of his hunt!
We will have one final celebration on Sunday. My brother, Ben, also had a birthday in February. So, all my family that is here in Utah will get together to celebrate all the February birthdays. We'll visit and have dessert. And then we have a break until almost June- when we will have three more!
I just returned from a forty minute trip all the way to---
the next exit down the freeway from me and back!
typically a 15 minute trip and not actually my destination!!

What's the best party you ever had? What do you do for the men in your life?
11 Comments:
Lucas would say the best party he ever had was the outdoor water party he had 2 (or was it 3?) years in a row. Max would say the best party he ever had was last year when we took some of his friends to the space center in PG. I used to go all out, but now I am a big fan of the parties where we take the kids mini golfing or bowling -- no mess or chaos at my house!
The treasure hunt sounds like just the thing for Kelly! Marc is not too hard for me, I know the things he likes. He's thrilled if we go out on a date, and then I let him choose what he wants for a birthday dessert. Other men in my life can be more difficult. Movie tickets, books, gift cards, etc.
What a fun post-- 2 family birthdays close together! I loved the birthday party ideas and the yummy dessert you made sounded so good.
Love that you sang for Kelly...our girls love the version of Happy Birthday, you live in a zoo, and get the biggest kick out of that for some reason.
Fave gifts for Scott: Usually food related. Chocolate is a big love of his so that is easy. I usually make the dark chocolate flourless cake.
The girls and I also did a fun coupon book for him one year and he loved that. On his 30th we did 30 things I love about my daddy and framed it.
We hardly ever do a big gift for our bdays since they are in the same week and just over a week before Christmas... (boo)
You're in birthday alley too it seems. I like your self-portrait for today and I'm glad you turned around instead of driving to Salt Lake. I hate it when it's windy and slippery at the same time, too scary.
I can't figure out Randy's love language either, very frustrating.
There is no way I would have made it to Salt Lake either. I would have had to turn around or they would have found me crying on the side of the road. I can take tons of snow but if it is windy and I'm sliding, the roads get the best of me.
I love your picture and with all that snow I would look the same way. How fun for Kelly to get to hunt for his present. It sounds like it is right up his ally. Milo is always happy with an iTunes card. I get so bored getting him that though, I'm trying to get him to branch out.
So cute. I love that you went in singing at his office.
Jimmy's love language is acts of service. He is happiest with clean socks and ironed shirts. Not too exciting but it took me years to figure out and a relief to know. I don't think I have ever rocked his world on a holiday though, I need to try harder.
I can't believe how much snow we got today...crazy. I wanted to run errand, but since it was a white out i decided best to stay in. Glad you turned around.
I Love the photo.
The birthdays sound like a lot of fun. We always end up combining birthdays since there are so many close together. I think I may need to try this wunderbar. I keep hearing about it.
I'm with you. I have yet to figure out how to give Jeremy the perfect gift. He's so hard to shop for. The treasure hund sounds perfect for Kelly, though. Really perfect.
I don't remember many of my parties growing up. I do remember a Halloween Party my parents threw for the kids in the neighborhood. They set up a haunted house in our garage. I also remember when I was older my parents would let me take two or three friends to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. It's a small amusement park on the beach in Santa Cruz, California. That was always fun. One of the good things about having a summer birthday, since we all know summer birthdays are the wrost thing for kids in school.
I wish I could be there to help you celebrate all the birthdays this month! It sounds like Kate had a great time. What a great party! Your girls look so grown up!
I think most women struggle with gifts for the men in their lives. I finally figured out Scott is happiest with things that will entertain him, so movies, books and video games. As for the other men in my life, don't ask me. I'm clueless! I love that you did a treasure hunt for Kelly. That sounds so perfect for him! I can't wait to hear all about it once he's completed it.
i don't remember the best bday for myself but i did have fun doing the fire engine party for christian when he turned 3. (i think i told you about that one). sounds like some very fun celebrations. so creative! i have a hard time getting creative for dave...i need to be better. but i know i'm good i can get him a Mrs. Backer's bday cake. his absolute favorite!
I've been too busy or tired to respond to all your wonderful posts, but have LOVED every one! Kelly's treasure hunts are too fun. I love your Tuesday self-portraits and was crazy about your 100 Things about Me list! I always love pictures, especially birthdays. Can't believe Kate's 10! Cookie sundaes sound fun, and the chicken cordon bleu casserole with Ritz is good.
I've had my first day-long babysitting opportunities with Kyra, and it makes me hungry to be closer to all my grandchildren to see them grow. Miss you all!
jenn, just a quick note to say that Cass was THRILLED to get Kate's letter today. YAY!
hope all is well in your world...
