a day of FEASTING

Yesterday I was blessed to attend Women's Conference with Jill. In one of the classes I attended, the speaker said that, according to the 1828 Webster's Dictionary, the definition of feast is to be highly gratified or delighted. I love this! I received much wisdom and insight at Women's Conference, but it was the delightful and inspiring results of my day that truly made it a feast!

The speaker who talked about feasting was Janet Sharman and her point was that we are told to feast on the words of Christ, but that does not mean we have to read a large number of pages or chapters. To feast on the scriptures means that when we are done reading as much as we can, we have delighted in the words we read. Revolutionary thought for me! She also said that blessings and protections specific to each of us are withheld when we don't read the scriptures! That was a very personal motivator because I don't want to miss out on my blessings! If I were to summarize her words into one statement, she said, "Simply reading brings powerful blessings!"

One other idea she shared was that it is necessary for us to teach our children the importance of the scriptures. She told the story of a mother who bought each child their own, inexpensive set of scriptures. When they learn a scripture story, they mark it with stickers and pictures in each child's own scriptures so they 1) know the story and 2) know where it is in the scriptures! I LOVE THAT!
One of the stories they learned was the Tree of Life. The mother blindfolded her children and fashioned an iron rod from a golf club, then let the children follow it to the tree (a child's basketball stand) and partake of the fruit (treats!). Sister Sharman added, this is not done every week. This mother is busy just like all of us. Remember that doing something is better than doing nothing!

I want to share with you ALL the great things I learned! I think I will break up my classes and experiences into seperate posts so you don't get overwhelmed. I hope what I write will leave you feeling like you too were able to feast on the wisdom and insights shared at Women's Conference and maybe next year we can all go together!!

I love the thoughts from your scripture class and look forward to your future posts about the rest of your experience.

Those scripture ideas are all great and I need to be better about teaching the kids how to use their scriptures and to bring those stories to life.

Thanks for sharing Jenn. I always think it sounds fun to go and then don't make the efforts to get there. I love that they replay many of the talks on KBYU. I have always recorded them on to tapes to watch but now with DVR it will be so easy. They are going to be on the 19th and 20th and then replay for several weeks after that.

I love the idea about the kids and scriptures. We are struggling with that because Jessica has her new, nice baptism scriptures now so I don't want her to be too out of control with the marking etc, but then James uses Jimmy's mission scriptures which are practically a coloring book. I love the idea of knowing where to find things, for myself also.

I look forward to hearing what else you learned and which speakers to watch for on TV.

I'm so glad that you were able to attend some classes. I bet your booth was fantastic. I really wish that I could have gone.

Fabulous scripture idea! I love things that are simple that the kids will enjoy. I always forget how important it is that they do things that are "hands on". They remember and enjoy it more that way.

Thanks for sharing. Keep posting about Women's Conference. You post makes me think about how life changes, and interests change. When I went to WC in college I wasn't thinking about ideas for family oriented things. My attendance was more me centered. I'll bet there are a ton of good ideas presented at WC. I think it woudl be so much fun to all go together next year! Also, there's always education week in August!
