self indulgent

I am so lucky to have a room I call my own. Really, I share it with all my kids and their coloring, punching, glueing creativity. But, even they know it is MY space. With five kids, including one still sleeping in my closet, some people say it is selfish of me to take a whole room for my crafts but it is more than just a craft room for me. It is my HAPPY place. It is filled with things I love to do, see, and touch. It is full of things that remind me I am a creative person with talents. It is full of things that remind me I have really good friends. It is full of things that just make me happy and when life is crazy, rotten and hard- I go to my happy place and rejuvenate. A good dose of gingham ribbon and alphabet stamps, maybe throw in a little smokey plum ink, and I am ready to go back out in the chaos. Selfish, to take a whole room for that? I don't think so. The dictionary says selfish is having no regard for others. Most the time, I use my happy space on behalf of others- wrapping gifts, making presents, changing my mood so I can be calm and kind... so, I don't think I am selfish. I like to think of it as self-indulgent: allowing myself a special pleasure. And I get a LOT of pleasure from this fabulous little room!

There's just no way that room can translate into selfishness. You are always making things for other people, or working on awesome scrapbooks for your kids (that's a huge gift), but more importantly the room makes you happy, and if the mom isn't happy then nobody is happy. So really it benefits the entire family. (I know I love to go in there whenever I go to your house, it makes me happy just to look around at all the goodness.)
I've heard it's fabulous! I need to see it sometime!
Ahhhh...Smokey plum!
That room is just a huge bundle of happiness contained within four walls. I could hang out in there indefinitely. It's not mine, but it makes me happy too. And with all of the fabulous, thoughtful gifts that have come out of that room... selfish? Come on! (Even if you didn't make things for other people, it would all be worth it just for your sanity and well-being.) Thanks again for using your talents to benefit others. I know I am a grateful recipient!
Add me to the list of those who are made happier because of your room, because of all you create in it, and the happiness it brings to you and those you so generously share with. Go, girl!
