Sunday Thoughts- The Scriptures
The lesson in Relief Society today was on the scriptures. I am terrible about reading my scriptures but am blessed with some truth, insight or direction EVERY time I open them. Here are some things that struck me today:
In addition to the lesson, I was directed to Elder Christofferson's talk from this last conference and it is amazing. I feel recommitted to reading my scriptures and enjoying the blessings and answers that come from these special books. I always loved the primary song, Search, Ponder and Pray-
- We talk about having canonized scriptures. Canon is from a Greek word meaning "a rod for testing straightness." I love that. As we study the scriptures, we can know if we are on the straight path that leads back to our Father in Heaven.
- It is a blessing and a responsibility to have our own set of scriptures in our own language available every day to us to read and study. Men have lost their life for translating the scriptures into their own language and I have at least three sets of my very own!
- The words of our modern prophets are also scripture which, according to the bible dictionary, means that they are sacred and inspired words, spoken under the influence of the Holy Ghost. How reassuring.
- When we study the scriptures, it enlarges our memory, sheds light on falsehood and error, brings us to repentance, and causes us to rejoice in Christ.
- When we study the scriptures, we avoid the evils of the world, feed our minds with truth, grow closer to God and to each other.
- If we will read the scriptures, we will not be deceived.
- God will judge us according to those things recorded in the scriptures. What we need to know to pass judgment into the Celestial Kingdom is found in the scriptures. That seems like pretty important information.

I love to read the Holy Scriptures,
and every time I do
I feel the Spirit start to grow within my heart-
a testimony that they’re true.
Search, ponder and pray
are the things that I must do.
The spirit will guide and deep inside,
I’ll know the scriptures are true.
So prayerfully I’ll read the scriptures
each day my whole life through.
I’ll come to understand. I’ll heed the Lords’ command
and live, as he would have me do.
Search, ponder and pray
are the things that I must do.
The spirit will guide and deep inside,
I’ll know the scriptures are true.

Yeah!!! I LOVE the scriptures. Thanks for blogging about it. This lesson was such a blessing for me and I LOVED all of the comments on Sunday and what all of the sisters had to say, it was fabulous.
I guess I should be better about daily study. I'm such a slacker.
Yours is a wonderful testimony. I hope all my children feel as strongly as you. Thank you, Jennifer.
Your Mom and I both testify from many years of reading and studying the scriptures...
"The spirit did guide and deep inside,
We KNOW the scriptures are true!"
So interesting about the word canon, I never knew that!
It really is a blessing and a responsibility to have our own scriptures available to us. When I think about what so many people endured to make them available to us, it makes me feel ashamed that I don't take better advantage of them.
