music lover?

So, Jill was talking about music on her blog the other day and I responded by saying I didn't really follow music. All I listen to is Return of the King or PBS blaring in the other room. I have been bugged by this because I seem to have convinced myself that I'm not a music person. I think of Kelly as the music lover in our house. To illustrate:
When I told him Jill blogged about some guy who used to be in the band Men at Work, he laughed and told me I saw the guy open a Howard Jones concert a couple months ago. What? No, that was some old guy who swore A LOT and boasted of writing his songs while smoking marijuana. The guy Jill is listening to is named Cole or something. "You mean Colin Hay?" Kelly asks. Turns out, it is the same guy! Of course Kelly would know, he's a music lover! (So, Jill. I have heard Colin Hay! In person, not so great! But, Kelly played a couple of the acoustic songs from Colin Hay's album at i-tunes and they were good!) To add to the story, I mentioned that one of his song's was used on the soundtrack to Garden State (a tidbit shared by amy!) and Kelly bursts out with "I love that soundtrack! It is really good! It turned me on to (and he lists two or three other artists I have never heard of!)."

So, you see why I think I am not a music person? But the truth is, I AM a music person! I LOVE music! It's true, I don't really follow what's new or popular. I don't go looking for new music to listen to. I don't even turn it on that often because the quiet is so enjoyable when my day is filled with so much noise! But I love music! Many kinds of music! I still love Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond, and the Carpenters- all favorites my mom played when I was a child. I love lots of classical, opera, country, showtunes, soundtracks, 80's favorites... music has a powerful effect on my emotions and mood. I guess I listen to Return of the King because it is in the cd player and I am too lazy to change it! Maybe I need an ipod. Maybe I need a 6 disc changer. Maybe I just need to remember how much good music I have and turn some on! Today, we will try something besides Return of the King! (But if you haven't heard it, you should listen to it- it's great!)

I'm with you Jenn. I dont know what's new, I don't know what's popular, and in all honesty, I don't actually care. I have my classic favorites I can listen to all the time (a little more modern then yours), and then I have Micah to spice things up with his variety of tunes. It's totally ok to appreciate quiet, and I'm TOTALLY affected by the power of music. We must be sisters.

Too funny. I don't know anything about Colin Hay as a person (he sounds lame) but this acoustic cd is great. I also love the Garden State soundtrack (another Lori recommendation). It's cool that Kelly knows all this stuff, and it's cool that you've realized that you're more into music than you realized. I would recommend getting an under-the-counter radio/cd like Betsy gave me for Christmas (see photo galleries in the home section). You could play calm music while the kids eat which might quiet things down a bit, and books on cd while you're doing dishes. It's heavenly.

I think you're on to something Jill- I need to find a way to have music in more places in my house. Right now, there is a CD player in the craft room and my bedroom. That's it. Not even in my car- just cassestte! If I could listen in more places, I probably would. I resist the ipod idea, but Kelly listens to audio books and music all day with his. Maybe it's time to cave.

Don't consider it caving, think of it as evolving. It makes such a big difference to the mood of the house. We put on dance music sometimes and dance in the kitchen (me and Whitney), or if it's been a crazy day some James Taylor soothes me and calms the mood in the house. Sunday mornings we listen to church hymns played by a guitar and that's great too. It's heaven.

Jenn, get the iPod! You'll have music in your life all the time. All you need is an FM adapter and you can listen to it through the radio in your house or in your car. It's the best thing ever! I grew up in a very music loving family. I always thought my Dad had the coolest music--stuff from the 60's and 70's that was hugely popular when I was in junior high and high school. Now music is a bond that my Dad and I share. We're constantly sharing music recommendations back and forth.

Oh, and if you want another good soundtrack to listen to you should check out Six feet Under: Everything Ends. I listen to that one almost as much as I listen to Garden State.

Hmm. Apparently I need to get the Garden State soundtrack! I listen to music in my car and on my computer when I'm in or around the kitchen. Jill has got me listening to books when in my scrapbook room and I really enjoy that too. I have always loved music, but tend towards major ruts. I rely on other people to turn me on to new artists!
