forever fall...

I love fall. I love its variety- in color, in temperature, in mood... I could live forever in fall. Like George Eliot said,
Delicious Autumn... my very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.Today was a perfect fall day. The sun was out, but rain is on the way soon. As we drove towards the canyon, the bright and vivid colors kindled my anticipation. I when we arrived at Sundance, I was not disappointed.
We went to Sundance to use the free lift tickets Soren and Megan won at last week's BYU game. We had brought coats, in case it was cold. But we left those in the car. The sun was brilliant and the breeze was refreshing.
The main parking lot was full- apparently we were not the only ones who wanted to enjoy fall in the canyon! After winding around and up to an overflow parking lot, we found there was a shuttle! We would not have to hike our family of little ones down the road or back up- heaven!
The resort was busy but the line was short. It wasn't long before we were sitting 30 feet above the ground taking in the most amazing view of Utah's glorious mountains covered in fall foliage. There were pockets of snow in the shadowy cliffs of the mountaintop. But the sun seemed to warm everything else.
The wind blew off Emily's hat as we were riding the lift. (We recovered it later.) Ethan kept talking about it all day. "Hat? Where hat? (hand out, shoulders raised.) Dang, I love this kid!
We got off the lift to hike around and take some pictures. My kids set off immediately for their favorite activity- treasure hunting. We had not even found the trail before handfuls of leaves, rocks and flowers where being arranged and admired. My kids remind me that the colors are so much more than red and orange. They include every peachy and pinky shade in between. My favorite though was a maple leaf Kate found, truly the color of a ripe pumpkin.
One thing about treasures, they don't just sit on the trail waiting to be found. Our one incident of the day was when Emily, trying to reach the "most perfect leaf I have ever seen," started to slide down the mountain side! She only went about 12 feet but it made everyone (except Emily!!!) walk a little closer to the inside of the trail. (Kelly was kind enough to save the story of the man who died last week trying to save a 2 year old girl who slid down the mountain while hiking Timp until after we were in the car and leaving!!)
There were lots of bikers on the mountain today. They came up on the lift with their bikes hanging on the lift behind them. Ethan loved them! He kept screaming "fyin bies! (flying bikes!) bies fyin- buh-bye bies..." It was totally cracking me up and I was so grateful he was entertained or it would have been a long ride down trying to keep control of my stunt devil two year old while swinging 30 feet in the air!!
The fresh air and the beautiful scenery seemed to lift everyone's spirits. There was no fighting or yelling or name calling all afternoon. We headed back down the mountain with a wonderful memory of time together in a magnificent place. As we came over the last hill, safe and happy, I felt a rush of gratitude for my Heavenly Father and the for the blessings of beauty, safety and family that I enjoy. It was surely a perfect autumn day!

I can't believe your day- it was the perfect day to do it too! I have never thought of going up there on the lifts this time of year- I bet it was breathtaking.
"My kids remind me that the colors are so much more than red and orange. They include every peachy and pinky shade in between." I love that! I love that you could live forever in fall- so well put.
When I lived in a cool climate, I loved the summer. But now that I've lived awhile in warm climates, my favorite season is Fall. It seems to come so suddenly, and is such a refreshing change.
We don't get much color change in Texas, so I must envy your beauty there. The most beautiful thing though was such a day with your family. Glad you all survived.
Wow! What a great family trip. I spent the day inside watching conference. Why didn't I record it and spend time outside? I tend to somehow miss fall every year.
we made the snickerdooldes this weekend you sent us, they were so yummy, i gave some to my neighbor and she loved them and now thinks i can cook and wants the recipe.
what to do. i almost want to pass them off as my own, but then that whole talk on honesty is making me feel bad. i guess i will have to admit they were from the roller mills, but i did add the eggs, so maybe i could make her think i am a good cook.. ok i will tell the truth. thanks again
That does sound like a perfect fall day! We're headed up tomorrow evening for FHE. The kids and I went for a drive a couple of weeks ago, but the foliage was not in its prime yet. I can tell by looking up that now is the time to go!
Kelly's story was so scary -- I'm glad he saved it for after you left the danger zone!
Your day sounds divine! Jeremy the kids and I set out last weekend for the first annual Spring City Arts Festival and Artist's Studio Tour. Spring City is off Highway 89 outside of something like Mt Pleasant--anyway, it's on the way to Manti. The colors in Spanish Fork Canyon were spectacular! This time of year is so beautiful. Isn't it interesting how almost everyone's favorite season is fall?
Where are the pictures from your outing? I'm sure you took lots of great ones, I want to see them.
Randy and I were just talking about how we need to go ride the ski lift at Sundance so we can see the leaves and be outside. That's one of my favorite things to do and it's kind of ridiculous that I don't do it more often.
Fall here means gray skies and rain, not colored leaves and crisp air. I envy the seasons you get there. It sounds like you had an amazing family outing. I'm sure your kids will remember it for a long time!
What a great idea...to ride the ski lifts to enjoy the colors. What a fun day for your family. I also really enjoyed the quote from horowitz. You all always have such great knowledge of quotes.
You are right...the perfect fall day. Just love the fall and am jealous you did that. Why am I not out there making my dreams come true? I think the fall is almost over. So sad.
