The Silly Violinist
Megan had a recital of sorts tonight- her teacher only has two students right now, so we made it a Family Home Evening and gathered to hear the two girls play.
Megan messed up her first song and ended up in a fit of giggles that she never quite recovered from. The other girl had beautiful piano accompaniment from her mother which made her sound more impressive than she really was. In combination, it made for a disheartening night for Megan. Not that she really showed it- Megan is a pretty easy going girl. But she seemed grateful when I asked her to play her songs again at home- which she did beautifully!
After the recital, we went to JCW's for dinner- if she was a little somber after her performance, a cheeseburger the size of her face and a few onion rings surely fixed that!!
I'm trying to decide if I should be demanding more of Megan and her violin practice. I've never harped on her about it and I let her practice for just 20-30 minutes a day, so she isn't as good as some of her friends, but her form is beautiful and she could be so very good at it. Of course, I want her to enjoy it too...Despite some mistakes, I thought she did a great job and she has come a long way since her last performance. I was proud of her and I hope she knows that!

It's a fine balance between encouraging a child to practice an instrument and pushing too hard -- I'm sure you'll find the right balance. I think it's most important that they enjoy it! Recitals are great experiences because, even when they make mistakes, they learn that life goes on.
A cheeseburger the size of your face is a cure-all for all sorts of life's problems. Way to be a supportive mom in letting her know how special her talents are.
I totally want to hear her play. I'll have to keep that in mind for when I'm back from Texas.

How funny to have a fit of giggles while playing the violin, that takes some serious skills.
