the end of a tradition
My grandpa Paul loved to eat almost as much as he loved to take other people to eat! One of the places he loved to go was Sunday Brunch at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City. My grandpa died many years ago, but we have tried to continue the tradition as often as possible when family is in town.
Today, we went. But today felt different, like it may just be time to end this tradition.
(I wanted to take a self portrait and Angela had the brilliant idea of using the beautiful mirrors in the ballroom where brunch is served! But the lighting is low and I could not get a clear picture- bummer.)
We have always felt conflicted with going out to eat on Sunday, a practice we generally avoid. Combine that with the rising cost and some consistently mediocre food (admittedly mixed with some really great food!), and the tradition does not seem to hold its value.
I can't say we will never go again. I can say, we probably won't be making such a point of going anymore. And really, when you think about it, the tradition wasn't really eating at Little America but sharing good food together with the people you love. And that is a tradition that will live strong in my family!!
Thank You Grandpa Paul for inviting us all to the table!

Sunday brunch would be a definite conflict of interest for me, so I can definitely understand that aspect of things. Perhaps there's a lovely Saturday brunch somewhere (like Thanksgiving Point) that could be substituted for a new tradition.
Great self-portraits again!
I think you're right, that the real tradition is sharing good food with those we love. That's something that won't ever change. I wish I could have been there to celebrate with you last week! I miss you all.
I agree with Jill, Thanksgiving Point has a wonderful Saturday brunch! (although pricey if you have a big group)
I am loving your frequent updates and all of the great self-portraits!
You are very good at self-portraits. They actually look like pictures you would want to keep ( I don't think that about most of those that I see).
It is always kind of sad to me when traditions are "over." But like you said we usually realize we were holding on to the wrong thing.
Good luck today! I think it is the first day of school for you?? Your kids look so cute in the back to school pics.
Unfortunately, I love Sunday brunch, oh the crepe bar, yummy but at the same time it's ok to let traditions of places fade, especially when the food isn't as good. Family will always gather to enjoy each other, it's more that than the food.
